What you need to know

  • Apple has announced a major shakeup to its Today at Apple program.
  • It is bringing free sessions to YouTube.
  • The first episode is now live.

Apple has today announced its plans to bring its free Today at Apple sessions from its retail stores to YouTube.

From CNET:

Apple announced plans on Wednesday to expand its free educational efforts by bringing a version of its Today at Apple retail classes to YouTube. The tech giant said it plans to offer creative projects for photo, video, art and design, teaching various techniques throughout each video.

The first episode of the series is already live and features one of Apple’s Creative Pros teaching you how to draw yourself as a Peanuts character, with help from some of the animators in the show.

The tutorial centers around Apple’s iPad and Apple Pencil but Apple says it can be done with your finger and a device like the iPhone 12, as well as Apple’s Pages app.

Apple recently announced new Virtual Today at Apple Sessions to help people create Ted Lasso fan art, as the company continues to expands its community projects like Today at Apple to a wider audience.

The move is no doubt in part a response to a decrease in footfall at Apple stores worldwide. Back in July it was reported by Bloomberg that Apple would soon start testing a hybrid work from home model for its retail employees, where staff would spend some weeks working at home helping customers with online shopping, technical support, and customer service:

The report says the move is an “acknowledgment that the trend of greater online shopping accelerated by Covid-19 may continue despite economic re-openings and vaccine availability in many parts of the world.” Whether employees are based at home or in-store would reportedly depend on demand.

Apple says that more videos in the online Today at Apple series are coming “soon”.
