Players can use the Wyvern Riding feature to turn the tides of battle.
Monster Hunter Rise takes the best aspects of old-school Monster Hunter titles and modern quality-of-life changes from Monster Hunter World and combines them to make an amazing game. The verticality and range of movement in the game have completely changed the way players approach hunts, making it one of the best games that can be bought on the Nintendo Switch.
What is Wyvern Riding?
Wyvern Riding is an evolution of the Monster Riding mechanic from Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and the Raider Riding mechanic from Monster Hunter World. It allows players to attack and ride a monster, using it to get around the map, launch it into obstacles, and attack other monsters.
How can I ride Wyverns during a hunt?
Use Wirebug Jumping Attacks or Silkbind moves. These moves are made by pressing ZL and either X or A. Damage done with these moves will have a special blue tint to the damage numbers displayed, which indicates that these moves can induce a “Mountable State.” Monsters that deal damage to each other will also contribute to the Mountable State, which is why it is important to wait or lure monsters into the vicinity of other monsters if you want to Wyvern Ride.
Land a blow or sheath your weapon and press A to start riding your monster once it is ready and the prompt appears on the screen.
Move around with the left analog stick while holding R. Holding R is important as it allows for better control of the monster, meaning you can direct it to attack other monsters or hit obstacles. The Wyvern Riding timer shows how long you can ride a monster until you’re thrown off its back, so make sure you don’t tarry for too long. Attacks from other monsters can reduce this timer as well, so stay sharp!
Use Wyvern Riding moves. Perform light attacks with X, strong attacks with A. Evade attacks from other monsters with B. Evading attacks will consume your Wirebug gauge. Evading attacks from other monsters just before they land will also cause the opposing monster to stumble, opening them up for an attack.
Launch monsters into obstacles, walls, or other monsters with Y. This will inflict serious damage on both the monster you are riding and any monsters you collide with. Press B after launching into something, or you will be thrown from the monster while it topples over.
Build your Wyvern riding gauge by attacking other monsters, evading attacks, and launching it into obstacles. Once the Wyvern Riding Gauge is full, it will begin to deplete over time, so make sure to make the most out of it before it disappears.
Once the Wyvern Riding Gauge is full, press X + A to perform a Mounted Punisher where you deal massive damage on your opponent. Mounted Punishers are particularly useful for gaining the upper hand against fast, evasive monsters.
Monster Hunter Rise is an intense game with mechanics that, when mastered, can make for an incredible experience. From mastering the different weapons to playing online with friends, this game will definitely be remembered for its content for years to come.
